When the rebuild triggered code upgrades

The loss
An older home was damaged badly enough that the rebuild had to meet current code. The offer priced putting back what was there, not what the city would now require.
The first pass
- Replacing the home as it was built.
The full claim
- The rebuild.
- Wiring the current code requires.
- Today's structural and safety standards.
- The added cost of building to the rules.
What we did
We identified the ordinance-and-law coverage in the policy, established which upgrades the current code would require, and documented the difference between replacing the old home and building the one the city would actually permit.
The outcome
The settlement reflected the cost of a compliant rebuild, not a rebuild of a house that could no longer legally be built.
Nobody told us you can't just rebuild it the way it was. The code had changed. The claim hadn't caught up.
