A house fire, and the half of the claim

The loss
A family's home was heavily damaged by fire. The carrier moved quickly, and the opening offer focused on rebuilding what had visibly burned. It was a real number, and it was a fraction of the loss.
The first pass
- The structure, rebuilt.
The full claim
- The structure.
- The contents, room by room.
- The months living elsewhere.
- The code the rebuild now required.
What we did
We built a room-by-room inventory of what the family had lost, valued at replacement cost, documented every expense of living away from home, and established the code and scope items the first estimate had left out. Then we presented the full, substantiated claim and held to it.
The outcome
The settlement reflected the whole loss, not the part that was easy to see. The contents and the cost of living elsewhere, absent from the first offer, were recovered as part of the claim.
We thought the first number was the number. We had no idea how much of our own loss we were about to leave behind.
